Frequently Asked Questions ..

The following is a list of frequently asked questions and the advice that we would give.

Will I need to increase my tyre pressures when carrying a pillion or luggage?

No, when tyre manufacturers conduct their testing all variables like this are taken into consideration and tested for. The pressures indicated in the fitment guides for tyres can be used for both solo and dual riding.

The pressures in my handbook are different to those quoted from the tyre fitment guides. Why is this?

The pressures in your handbook only refer to the tyre on which the bike left the factory if you are choosing a tyre that is not listed in your handbook then you shoul take the tyre manufacturers recommendations.

Can I mix manufacturers tyres?

Tyre manufacturers have neither the time or resources to test how their tyres run with others and as the production methods for each tyre it is never recommended.

Can I repair a motorcycle tyre that is punctured?

Some tyres can be repaired to specific guidelines. A puncture should be repaired as soon as possible to enable the most optimum repair. When an emergency repair has been carried out it is important to get the tyre dismounted and inspected . Only when satisfied that a repair is viable and safe would we attempt to permanently repair a tyre.

When is the best time to check my tyre pressures?

Tyre pressures must be checked when the tyres are cold, and should be checked on a weekly basis

Should I replace the valve when a new tyre is fitted?

YES, It is very important to change rubber valves every time as these perish over time. They also bend with prolonged use.

Why do you have to ‘run in’ new tyres?

In order for your new tyres to provide optimum performance they should be ridden very cautiously for the first 100 miles in order to condition and settle them on the rim, this allows the tread surface to be scrubbed in and function properly. The tyres should then be checked to ensure correct seating and inflation. After this initial period, lean angles and acceleration and braking forces canbe gradually increased. Always remember that a tyre works most efficiently when it reaches optimum operating temperature.

I want a bigger tyre on the back of my bike is this possible?

Although you are free to fit what every tyre you like on your bike we would recommend sticking to the size the manufacturer recommends, your bike has been tested to see which tyre size performs the best however if you still wish to increase the size the there are some things to bear in mind:

  • Clearance - the heat generated in a tyre caused by riding can increase the size of the tyre so ensure you have adequate space around huggers, chains and swing arms.
  • Insurance - it is always best to read your policy details and make sure there is no small print regarding tyres on your bike.
  • Always take advise from a qualified experienced tyre fitter to ensure that the rim you are using is large enough to take a bigger tyre.
